I am sure that you must have learnt subtraction by now. I am going to train you for a smarter subtraction skill. The aim is to make subtraction ‘simple & visual’ for you.
Do you remember ‘target 10 in addition’ article ? We will use the same trick here.
We need to ‘target 10’ (or 100 & 1000 for higher levels) to make our subtraction smarter.
For mastering this “target 10” skill, I need you to know all the number bonds of 10 at your finger tips. I am noting down a few ‘number bonds of 10’ for you :
1 + 9 = 10
2 + 8 = 10
3 + 7 = 10
…
…
…
Please complete this list in your notebook. You can master these number bonds using these games as well –
Number Bond Game 1 (no login/password needed for the game)
Number Bond Game 2 (no login/password needed for the game)
Once you are super-confident with the number bonds of 10, try to use this skill in subtraction.
You already know that subtraction means ‘take away’.
What does 13 – 5 mean?
It means ‘take away’ 5 from 13.
How much should I take away from 13 to make it 10?
3, right? 13 – 3 = 10
So, I suggest you to first take away 3 and then take away the remaining amount ( 5 – 3 = 2).
We are breaking up the ‘take away amount’ to make subtraction simple for us.
I am solving one question from each worksheet for you. Please refer to it and let me know in case you have any further question.
Here you go :
13 – 5
= 13 – 3 – 2 (Target 10)
= 10 – 2 (number bond of 10)
= 8
44 – 26
= 44 – 20 – 6 (Take away the Tens first)
= 24 – 6 (Now, this is worksheet 1 type of question)
= 24 – 4 – 2 (Target 10)
= 20 – 2 (number bond of 10)
= 18
Once you complete these worksheets, you will surely be smarter at your subtraction work.
Enjoy smarter subtraction!
