Target 10 in Addition

This is a post for grade 2 students.

I am sure that you must have learnt addition by now. I am going to train you for a smarter addition skill. The aim is to make addition ‘simple & visual’ for you.

Let’s take a look at an example

8 + 4           &              10 + 2

The answer is same in both cases but somehow calculating 10 + 2 is faster & easier. Isn’t it ?

That’s the trick!

We need to ‘target 10’ (or 100 & 1000 for higher levels) to make our addition smarter.

For mastering this “target 10” skill, I need you to know all the number bonds of 10 at your finger tips. I am noting down a few ‘number bonds of 10’ for you :

1 + 9 = 10

2 + 8 = 10

3 + 7 = 10

Please complete this list in your notebook. You can master these number bonds using these games as well –

Number Bond Game 1   (no login/password needed for the game)

Number Bond Game 2    (no login/password needed for the game)

Once you are super-confident with the number bonds of 10, try to use this skill in addition.

I am solving one question from each worksheet for you. Please refer to it and let me know incase you have any further question.

Here you go :

Worksheet 1

  7 + 4        (break 4 into 3 & 1, because 7 needs 3 to make 10)

= 7 + 3 + 1

= 10 + 1

= 11

Worksheet 2

   76 + 9    (break 9 into 4 & 5, because 6 needs 4 to make 10)

= 76 + 4 + 5

= 80 + 5

= 85

Once you complete these worksheets, you will surely be smarter at your addition work.

Enjoy smarter addition!
